Where the Wild Things Are

Book · 1963 · Maurice Sendak, illustrated by Maurice Sendak

This beloved 40-page picture book follows Max, a boy sent to his room without supper after a bout of mischief, who imagines sailing away to a land of fantastical monsters and becoming their king before choosing home and love over wild adventure. The monsters look goofy and friendly rather than truly frightening, and the emotional core is one of the warmest in all of children's literature.

A wonderful read-aloud from about age 3 and up, with the richest conversations happening around ages 4 to 7.
