Thomas & Friends
A gentle, narrator-led series following Thomas the Tank Engine and his locomotive friends on the fictional Island of Sodor, built around teamwork, responsibility, and making things right after mistakes. The earliest seasons carry a notably sterner tone than later ones, with a handful of moments that can genuinely startle very small viewers.
Most episodes suit ages 2 and up, though a few early-season episodes with darker consequences may be better watched with a grown-up alongside toddlers and very sensitive preschoolers.
Episodes to know about
Henry refuses to leave a tunnel and is punished by having a brick wall built across the entrance, trapping him inside in the dark; his sad face peering above the bricks is the show's most striking image of isolation. He is freed in the very next episode, but the two-episode span can feel grim to sensitive toddlers.
Ghost Train: Percy disguises himself as a ghost to frighten Thomas, and Toby implies Percy may have been badly hurt in an accident; the foggy, atmospheric visuals and the suggestion of injury make this one of the eerier early episodes.
Henry's tunnel story opens a natural conversation with little ones about stubbornness, consequences, and forgiveness, and the happy resolution in S1E4 gives it a reassuring payoff worth talking through together.
