The Magic School Bus
This beloved PBS science series covers all 52 episodes across four seasons (1994–1997), following the eccentric Ms. Frizzle and her class on magical field trips through the human body, outer space, the ocean, and more. The content is wonderfully wholesome and educational, with only mild moments of cartoon peril and a handful of episodes that lean into spooky or gross-out science themes.
A great fit for curious kids around 5 and up, though very sensitive 4-year-olds may want a grown-up nearby for the spookier or grosser episodes.
Episodes to know about
The class gets stranded in outer space with the bus unreliable; the show doesn't sugarcoat how scary being lost in space could feel, and a classmate's reckless driving nearly sends them into Jupiter's storm system.
The class is shrunk and swallowed, then threatened by white blood cells trying to engulf the bus; the interior-of-the-body visuals can look alarming to very young viewers.
The rot and decomposition episode features mold, fungi, and decay up close; perfectly accurate science, but the visuals gross out some kids.
