The Lion King

Movie · 1994

This beloved Disney musical follows young lion cub Simba on a journey through loss, self-discovery, and courage, set to iconic songs and gorgeous hand-drawn animation. It runs darker than many Disney films of its era, with a villain-led murder, a frightening stampede, and menacing predator imagery that can genuinely unsettle younger or more sensitive children.

Most comfortably enjoyed by children ages 6 and up, though a reassuring grown-up nearby makes it work for emotionally ready 4- and 5-year-olds too.

Dark, steaming boneyard setting; hyenas emerge from shadows and chase Simba, Nala, and Zazu, snapping at the cubs — the scariest scene for many young viewers.

The hyenas goose-step in formation with imagery referencing Nazi rallies; also the fullest expression of their coded characterization — worth pausing to discuss with older children rather than skipping.
