Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
This action-packed animated sequel follows Puss as he races to reclaim his nine lives, but it runs noticeably darker than the Shrek films parents may remember. The story carries genuinely meaningful themes about cherishing life, yet the villain portraying Death and several intense scenes make it a better fit for older kids.
Most comfortable for kids 8 and up, with a parent nearby for younger fans who are already Puss fans and handle scary characters well.

Puss is killed on screen early in the film and his previous eight comic deaths are briefly replayed; sets up the mortality theme immediately.
The Wolf (Death) makes his first appearance; his design and whistling are intentionally frightening and may startle young children.
A character recounts a backstory involving abandonment and an attempted drowning; emotionally heavy and may prompt difficult questions.
