My Melody & Kuromi
This Netflix stop-motion series (premiering July 24, 2025) starts out as a cozy baking rivalry between two Sanrio sweethearts in the pastel town of Mariland, but grows steadily darker across its 12 short episodes, introducing possessed characters with glowing red eyes, zombie-like villagers, and a villain with a haunting backstory. The handcrafted visuals are genuinely stunning, and the show lands on a warm message about friendship and kindness — but the ride there may surprise parents who expect pure kawaii fluff.
Best suited for kids around 8 and up who can handle fantasy-horror twists; the early episodes are gentler and may be fine for confident 6–7 year olds watched together with a parent.
Episodes to know about
Early episodes are mostly light-hearted baking rivalry with gentle mischief; a mysterious magical heart is introduced in Episode 1, and an ominous encounter with a giant fluffy bear in the clouds appears in Episode 2 — these are mild but signal the darker turn ahead.
The series' tone shifts here: villagers who eat Kuromi's magically enhanced dorayaki develop glowing red eyes and begin acting possessed and zombie-like, chasing other characters with increasing intensity.
From mid-series onward, stakes escalate sharply — characters are transformed into sweets, homes are wrecked, and the possessed mob devours everything in its path including a character made of cotton candy.
