Mulan
This live-action retelling is a serious, sweeping martial-arts epic that trades songs and Mushu for real battles, a shape-shifting witch, and genuine war stakes. It earns its PG-13 with frequent combat, characters killed on screen, and intense imagery that is a big step up from the 1998 animated version.
Best suited to school-age kids who are comfortable with action-movie intensity, roughly ages 8 and up.

A large spider crawls across the table during a tea ceremony; may startle arachnophobic children.
Soldiers encounter a battlefield aftermath with piles of dead bodies and armor; no blood or gore, but the image is sobering.
Major avalanche sequence: flaming boulders are launched by catapult, triggering a snowy avalanche that engulfs an entire army; loud and visually overwhelming.
