Moana

Movie · 2026

This live-action remake follows Moana and the demigod Maui on their ocean quest to restore the heart of Te Fiti, hitting the same story beats as the beloved 2016 animated film. Because it is shot in live action, the monster sequences, storms, and a grandmother's death all land with noticeably more emotional weight than they did in the original.

Confident kids aged 7 and up will enjoy it most; the 2016 animated film is the gentler choice for younger or sensitive viewers.

Scary illustrated drawings are unfurled while Gramma Tala tells children the story of Maui's exile; several children in the scene scream and run away, and young viewers may react similarly.

Loss & griefearly in the film, Gramma Tala's illness and farewellModerate

Gramma Tala is shown looking very ill surrounded by worried family; she shares a longer goodbye with Moana than in the animated original, and her death (off-screen) follows shortly after, which moved young viewers to tears in parent screenings.
