Avatar: The Last Airbender
This live-action Netflix adaptation follows 12-year-old Avatar Aang and his friends on an epic quest to stop the conquering Fire Nation, and it covers two seasons of aired content (Seasons 1–2). It is a noticeably more intense retelling than the beloved animated original, with real-looking combat, fire-based violence, and war themes that carry genuine weight.
Confident, adventure-loving kids around 11 and up who can handle realistic-looking battle scenes and some on-screen loss; fans of the animated series should know this version is darker.
Episodes to know about
The pilot depicts the Fire Nation's genocide of the Air Nomads with on-screen firebending attacks on a helpless community including elders and children; screaming is audible throughout. This is the single most intense sequence in the series.
Aang discovers the skeleton of his beloved teacher later in the pilot episode; the remains are not gory but are clearly visible and emotionally upsetting.
Aang learns the full scope of what he lost — his teacher, his people, his entire way of life — making this episode heavier than most that follow.
